Is google making us stupid?
I have always been a fan of technology. It is the hope of our future. Thanks to technology we have found many cures for diseases and have made life more practicle. A technological advancement that has changed the world of literature is google. To me me google is very influential and i consider it to be a time savior. Yes the articles we read are smaller than actual books but if you realize the book has context that is irrelevant to the facts that we want to find. nicholas char is saying how because of google it is more likely for your concentration to be distrcted but in reality i think that on the contrary, google helps you focus on what is really importat. It helps answer questions automatically with the click of a button. It is not that we are getting lazy but because google is so much more efficient in providing information that we can finish a task in a matter of hours instead of days. I dont think that you are getting less educated when reading google. Google is there to give you the opportunity to search millions of sites that have valuable information. It is HOW you use google which is the determining factor of whether you are stupid or not. What people dont realize is that it is an individuals responsiblity to take the time out to search all of these sites on google. For portion of popups that carr talks about i have one thing to say. There is something called pop-up control! The concentration is all dependent on an individuals dedication to studying. If you are the type of lazy person that does not take into account that google has many advantages than its you who is making yourself stupid. Not google.

Sounds great, the idea of simplicity and importance rather than irrelevant context in which the internet minimizes to focus on the big picture at hand. Good choice.
ReplyDeleteI agree when you say that google actually helps focus on the more important information where as the books have a lot of information that has nothing to do with the topic. I feel as though books are more of a distraction because there is so much material in them and there is a lot of information that can be cut out. Books tend to elaborate more on the smaller topics as well as bigger topics but google smashes all that together into a one page document rather than an 100 page book. I can also agree when you say that google is there to help but HOW we use google is where the complication comes in. Many people use google to look up articles on celebrities or find celebrity gossip sites but if you're using google to actually benefit you and your life then it is perfectly fine to use it. Favorite line in your blog is "if you are the type of lazy person that does not take into account that google has many advantages then it is you who is making yourself stupud. Not google." I think that is very true and you have a valuable argument as well as opinion to defend what you say. Good job. :P
